This suite of searches has been designed to help practice to understand the uptake of national screening services among their patient population. It also contains call and recall searches for Cervical Screening, as some practices have indicated this could be helpful.

To locate the searches access Population Reporting > Ardens Searches > 5.6 Ardens Cancer Searches > National cancer screening searches folder.

The suite contains 3 folders:

Each of these folders contains roughly the same information - each of these has a search for the eligible population, then one for those eligible and screened or declined.

Bowel Screening Uptake

This folder contains searches to identify patients age 60-74 eligible for bowel cancer screening, with a report to help you identify the latest coded screening or declined code for each patient.

The UPTAKE search a, will display the number of patients coded with a bowl screening result in the last 2 years, with sub searches to support identifying non-responders who have a result code on their record.

The UPTAKE search b will display the number of patients that have been coded as declined in the last 2 years.

Breast Screening

Again, this gives the eligible population and the uptake percentage and searches to take account of recommended screening for those with mastectomy (not bilateral).

It also provides a report of patients who should be highlighted to the screening authority as they may have died in the past 3 months, have had a bilateral mastectomy, be on the Learning Disability register or have a physical disability:

Note that physical disabilities are only picked up with the use of certain codes. We recommend that you add one of the following to ensure a patient is picked up in this category:
 - Registered disabled

 - Registered blind

 - Required reasonable adjustments for health and care access (Equality Act 2010)

Cervical Screening Uptake and Call & Recall

The Ardens Cervical screening call/recall searches allows practices to keep track of patients that requiring inviting in for cervical screening. This search folder is useful for practices who wish to follow-up on patients recalled by Cytology but no response.

There are 2 folders here as shown:

The Cervical screening call/recall is broken down into the different age groups for the different screening intervals:

Each call/recall search folder is broken down by the following searches:

Search 1. Check if called by cytology and code 185600000 if no response will return results for eligible patients that have not yet been screened, declined or contraindicated in the last 3 years and 6 months. We advise practices to check each patient record (Population Included) to check if the patient has been recalled by the Cytology, if recalled and no response add code 185600000 (Cervical smear - 2nd call).

Search 2. Send 3rd invitation (1st from practice) and code 185601001 will return results for eligible patients that have had two invites but have not yet been screened, declined or contraindicated. We advise practices to check each patient record (Population Included) to check if there has been no response from the patient or indication that the screening has taken place, if no response, send the patient a third invite and add code 185601001 (Cervical smear - 3rd call).

Search 3. 3rd invitation sent (set timeframe on run), consider exception will return results for eligible patients that have had 3 invitations. We advise practices to check each patient record (Population Included) and to decide if it is appropriate to add an exception code.

Search Data quality -invited but not using Ardens code is available for practices should they wish to use the Ardens system for recalling patients. By adding the 185600000 (Cervical smear - 2nd call) if the patient has been invited by Cytology but not yet invited by the practice, adding this code will ensure patients are picked up in search 3 to determine when a third invite needs to be sent.

Search Review: Exception reported in last 3y6m, not this year will return results for eligible patients that have had an exception code added in their record but not this year. Practices to decide if the exception code is to be added for this year and apply the appropriate code to the patient record.

Search Review: Exception reported last year as 3 invitations, not this year will return results for eligible patients that have had 3 invites but no exception code for this fiscal year. Practices to decide if the exception code is to be added for this year and apply the appropriate code to the patient record.

The Excepted patient info searches folder contains information searches on exception reporting for Cervical Screening.

The Cervical screening uptake search folder is similar to the other screening searches to enable you to identify those who fall into each target group and your uptake percentage:

The 'Eligible patients who have never had a smear' search looks for all patients in the eligible target group that have never had a smear recorded on their record or had a code of cervical smear not indicated.
