The Ardens Contraception Template allows the user to make appropriate contraception choices for patients by formulating and documenting a risk assessment in accordance with The UK Medical Eligibility Criteria (UK MEC). Lifestyle and sexual health/screening details can be recorded as part of the decision process to determine choice of contraception. There are also pages to review Gillick Competence and Fraser Guidelines, in addition to a Child Sexual Exploitation Checklist.
The Contraception Template is located in the Ardens Live Toolset > Consultation Templates > Contraception Folder.
Access the template within the patient record in one of the following ways:
- Click on the Run Template option within the consultation.
- Click on the Add > Data using Template option outside of a consultation.
Clicking on either of the options above will display the Template Picker screen.
Search for the Contraception template using the search box provided or via the navigation pane. Select the template and click on OK.
The template has been broken down by pages on the left-hand side. Navigate to the page required.
To support healthcare professionals in assessing a patient’s choice of contraception and determining which type of contraception is both safe and appropriate for the patient, the Risk Assessment page includes some of the key considerations from The UK Medical Eligibility Criteria (UK MEC) guidelines. The Lifestyle page contains further relevant UK MEC guidance such as smoking and BMI, which may impact on your decision-making.
Contraception consultations can be a useful opportunity to discuss sexual health as well as breast and cervical screening, and so we have included the Sexual Health/Screening page to record these discussions.
Given the current challenges associated with consulting remotely, we have, where possible, included any relevant FSRH Guidelines with regard to remote prescribing.
The template is subsequently divided into pages for specific forms/use of contraception, including Emergency Contraception, Starting combined pill or CHC, Starting progestogen only pill, Pill/CHC check and Depot Contraception.
These pages cover the initiation and review of these types of contraception. They also include relevant checks and advice with reference to the patient’s medical history. There is also the opportunity to record important discussion points, which are easily added to the consultation by the use of tick boxes.
The template includes an assessment of Gillick Competence, Fraser Guidelines and a Child Sexual Exploitation checklist.
To ensure patients have adequate information about contraceptive choices, there are also links to relevant patient information leaflets and appropriate management guidance.
Please note that Ardens has separate templates for Implants, and IUS, IUD and Coils, located within the Contraception templates folder.
Complete the template using the required fields and ensure you save the information, using the Save option.
If using the template via the Run Template option within an open consultation, you will also need to click Save to save the consultation.
Ardens has created IUCD Service Activity Reports and Register Reports within Population Reporting to help you identify patients with insertions, checks or removals within user-defined timeframes, as well as a register of patients with a coil in situ. To locate the searches, navigate to the Population Reporting module > Ardens Searches > 1.3 Ardens Admin Searches > Enhanced services (National) > IUCD Service folder.
