The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) is an established bowel cancer test which identifies the presence of faecal occult blood (FOB), indicating an early sign of colorectal cancer. This test is now a requirement of the Network Contract DES 2022/23 for 2WW referrals for Lower GI.
Ardens have developed a number of resources to support practices with FIT testing, including searches to keep track of urgent FIT tests, a template to record clinical activity and Network Contract DES searches to monitor the relevant cancer target.
Faecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT) Template
To locate the Ardens Faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) Template, access the relevant patient record. Open a new consultation and select the Run Template option (if not in consultations, click on the Add button on the EMIS ribbon, followed by Data Using Template option).
This will open the Template Picker screen. If you have accessed any templates before, these will display to the left of the screen. Search for the template by typing “fit” in the search box.
This will return the "Faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) template (Ardens)" (alternatively select the Ardens > Consultation > Procedures templates folder to the right of the screen).
Select the template and click OK to launch.
The template has been broken down by pages on the left-hand side to easily navigate around the template.
The Condition page provides information on the purpose of the test and when it should be routinely requested.
The Test page provides information on the referral criteria with a useful link to the NICE 2WW referral criteria for suspected colorectal cancer guidelines. The Action section within this page enables recording of the requested FIT test, the follow up plan and the ability to add a future diary entry for a repeat test (to be included in the Ardens Diary Recall System).
If the FIT result has NOT been automatically sent via electronic links from the lab, the Results page enables you to record the result. This page also offers information around interpretation of the results, recording action taken and the ability to add a future diary entry for a repeat test.
The Resources page provides links for information for patients and useful links for clinicians.
Network Contract DES Template
It is a requirement for the Network Contract DES 2022/23 to have a FIT test result recorded either in the 7 days leading up to a lower gastrointestinal 2 week wait referral, or in the 14 days after the referral. The Network Contract DES template enables recording the result if this has NOT already been recorded electronically.
Searches are available to monitor Network Contract DES activity and can be can be located in the Population Reporting module > 5.3 Ardens National Cntrct Reports > Network Contract DES > a. Investment and Impact Fund (IIF) > 1. Work done > Other folder.
Fast Track Safety Netting Tools
The Fast Track Safety Netting Tools includes the tracking of urgent diagnostics, including FIT tests. The Diagnostics Tracking page enables recording of the test request.
Searches are available to keep track of this activity and can be located in the Population Reporting module > 5.6 Ardens Cancer Searches > Fast track safety-netting > 2. Diagostics > FIT 2WW stratification folder.
It includes searches to monitor patients who have had a diagnostic referral for a FIT test recorded in the last 1 week – 90 days ago and either the result has not been received or has not been reviewed.
