The Ardens IUS IUD Coil template is used to record details and history relating to the use of intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) methods.  Such methods include copper IUDs and hormone releasing IUS, but for simplicity, the term IUC is used in this template to represent either method.

For other methods of contraception, please refer to the Ardens Contraception template.

Access the template in one of the following ways:

  • Click on the Run Template option within the consultation.
  • Click on the Add > Data using Template option outside of a consultation.

Clicking on either of the options above will display the Template Picker screen.

Search for the "IUS IUD Coil" template using the search box provided or via the navigation pane.

Select the template and click on OK.

The IUC information page clarifies what is covered by this template and gives guidance on IUC for emergency contraception.

The Gynae and contraceptive Hx page enables contraceptive methods, smears, abnormal bleeding, and STI risks to be recorded.  There is a section on Domestic abuse screening, as well as links to FSRH guidance on contraception.

The Counselling and consent page enables the healthcare professional to easily record advice given and risks explained, consent obtained, and assessment of pregnancy likelihood, as well as any bridging methods of contraception that may be considered.

The IUC insertion page is used to record that an IUC insertion procedure has been carried out, together with observations pre and post insertion.   Any problems encountered during fitting can be noted, as well as any onward referrals or investigations that may be needed.  Safety advice and IUC removal due date can also be recorded.

The IUC check page is used for routine follow-up, where symptoms can be reviewed, and an examination recorded. It can also be used to record any suspected infection, or a referral made due to lost IUC or suspected uterine perforation.

The IUC removal page allows for the recording of an IUC removal procedure, as well as any problems during removal, referrals made and plan for continuing contraception.

The template also includes an assessment of Gillick Competence, Fraser Guidelines, and a Child Sexual Exploitation checklist.

The Resources page has links to various resources, including patient information leaflets, and guidance for healthcare professionals.

Complete the template using the required fields and ensure you save the information, using the Save option.

If using the template via the Run Template option within an open consultation, you will also need to click Save to save the consultation.

Ardens has also created searches to facilitate the management of patients with an IUC in place.

  • Folder 1.2 Ardens Diary Recall Searches includes searches for patients with IUS or IUD removal diary entries.
  • Folder 1.3 Ardens Admin Searches > Enhanced services (National) has both activity and register reports on patients with IUC recorded.

Please note - you may have local searches created for this area and we suggest checking with your practice which searches you should be using for payment purposes.
