Ardens is currently considering the risks/benefits of producing a QRISK3 calculator that works from within EMIS Web and SystmOne. The obvious benefit is ease of accessing this calculator for clinicians. There are, however, significant risks with capturing very specific coded data and using EMIS Web/SystmOne to perform complex calculations based on it that may result in a patient’s management plan being altered.

An example of this is the MHRA alert relating to the QRISK2 calculator in 2016. This incident highlighted the difficulties in risk estimation and required GP practices to undertake additional work (via a National Enhanced Service) to address the issue. The lessons learned from this event underscore the necessity for caution with any new risk assessment tool.

In light of this, Ardens is working through all of the clinical safety risks to ensure that all are thoroughly mitigated before publishing a QRISK3 calculator. We remain dedicated to developing resources that meet the highest safety standards.

At present, as there is no QRISK3 calculator within EMIS web, Ardens has provided a QRISK3 data view template to save time and assist with completing the online QRISK3 calculator.

The QRISK3 data view template is located in the Ardens Live Toolset > Consultation Templates > Cardiology folder.

Access the template within the patient record in one of the following ways:

  • Click on the Run Template option within the consultation.
  • Click on the Add > Data using Template option outside of a consultation.

Clicking on either of the options above will display the Template Picker screen.

Search for the QRISK3 data view template using the search box provided or via the navigation pane. Select the template and click on OK.

The template will clearly show on the right in blue the relevant latest results (if recorded), clicking the arrow to the right of this information will open up a more detailed view showing trends.  If results have not been recorded it will display ‘No previous entry’.

The template contains visibility rules and will identify with a red cross, or green tick if a patient has been coded with diabetes, CKD, AF etc, also relevant family history. Please note, the last coded entry of FH cannot provide specific enough information, for example which family member, age etc, therefore we recommend you view the patients record to check further.

Due to EMIS limitations medications cannot be displayed within a template, therefore the template contains a prompt for which medication you should check has been prescribed within the patients medication screen.

You should now have all the latest clinical information needed to manually input into the online calculator via the link provided at the top of the template.
